Job Description:

The Senior GIS Manager is responsible for the implementation of Geographic Information services across Sport England to underpin the delivery of Sport England’s Strategy: Uniting the Movement. Sport England’s insight led approach to investment and “place based” local delivery means geographic data, spatial processes, standards and spatial analysis capabilities are critical to effective, efficient and informed decision making.

A key influencer, both internally and externally, the Senior GIS Manager supports and influences both colleagues and partner organizations to maximize the use of GI within Sport England and across the physical activity sector.Through the establishment of key relationships with external GI service providers and working closely with Sport England’s Directorates such as Facilities & Planning, Digital & Innovation and Insight.

In addition, the Senior GIS Manager has special responsibility for leading the development and delivery of national strategic planning tools that support the physical activity sector.

This includes the national sport facility database called “Active Places” and associated solutions, such as the Active Places Data Platform and Active Places Power website.

These are procured solutions delivered on behalf of Sport England via external providers that the Senior GIS Manager manages; seeking to not only enhance the systems to meet user needs, such as catchment and accessibility analysis, but also to increase data quality and maintenance efficiencies, through innovation and promotion across the sport sector


The Senior GIS Manager salary is advertised at £42,500 with a flexible working location either Bisham or Loughborough offices or home-based.

Job Requirements:

Significant experience is required in the following key areas:

- Leading corporate Geographic Information services to a medium/largeorganisation, including in a strategic capacity to improve business delivery.

- Leading corporate level projects using Agile or equivalent methods in addition to the management of external contractors, with procurement, contract management and budget management experience.

- Developing successful relationships both with internal and external stakeholders to continuously improve the impact of services delivered.

- Managing corporate spatial solutions based upon the Esri suite of software products.
