Job Description:

If you have understanding and experience of geospatial data, formats and standards, this role presents a career defining opportunity to lead and manage the UKHO’s contribution to the MOD’s Defence Geospatial Services (DGS) Test, Reference and Innovation Facility (DTRIF).

About the UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The role

DGS enables the MOD to respond to crises worldwide by providing more effective situational awareness capabilities. It enables military personnel and civil servants to search, discover, visualise, annotate, analyse, download and exploit authoritative Foundation Geospatial Information provided by Specialised Geospatial Centres.

The Defence Test, Reference and Innovation Facility (DTRIF) is the MOD Joint Geospatial Intelligence endorsed capability for the development and evaluation of geospatial web services, particularly those associated with the Defence Geospatial Services (DGS) and the wider MOD Spatial Data Infrastructure Sandbox.

Whilst DGS has been an emerging concept for some time, it has not yet been fully introduced and integrated as a platform for UKHO Defence Data provision.  As the DTRIF Manager you will work with the DGS Capability Manager (along with other industry partners) to bring DGS to full operational capability. Once operational you will take responsibility for the UKHO’s contribution to DTRIF, and lead on UKHO's Defence contribution to Web Services Standards. This will include working with UKHO Defence teams and Specialist Geospatial Centres to support MOD SDI Sandbox activities and events including Sprints and demonstration events.

Job Requirements:

What we are looking for
The successful candidate will have practical experience of using GIS software, with the confidence and ability to tackle novel problems with geospatial data formats, attribution and visualisation. You will be comfortable communicating with staff and customers internal and external to the UKHO, and able to clarify, interpret and manage customer requirements effectively.

To be successful in your application you will need:

  • An understanding of geospatial data management principles
  • A good knowledge of emerging geospatial developments
  • A comprehensive understanding and experience of geospatial data, formats and standards

Knowledge of MOD IT systems and specialist geospatial centres will be advantageous.

In return

UKHO is a great place in which to explore your career potential. While our projects are career-defining, the work/life balance that we can offer you is equally exceptional. From flexitime, flexible working, an award winning office environment and a generous annual leave allowance of 34.5 days including public holidays, the opportunities open to you here are hard to beat.

For more information and to apply please visit our website by clicking the apply button.
Closing date: 23:55 pm 13 March 2020.

Please note this is a MOD reserved post and therefore applications will only be accepted from UK Nationals (those with dual nationality are also ineligible to apply). The successful candidate must pass a disclosure and barring security check. (SC)

UKHO embraces diversity and promotes inclusion and equality of opportunity. We are a Disability Confident employer, which includes offering a guaranteed interview to candidates with disabilities, providing they meet the minimum selection criteria.
