Job Description:

If you have a strong understanding of geospatial data management principles this role presents a career defining opportunity to integrate the MOD’s Defence Geospatial Services (DGS) into the UKHO and bring the platform to full operational capability.

About the UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The role

DGS enables the MOD to respond to crises worldwide by providing more effective situational awareness capabilities. It enables military personnel and civil servants to search, discover, visualise, annotate, analyse, download and exploit authoritative Foundation Geospatial Information provided by Specialised Geospatial Centres.

Whilst DGS has been an emerging concept for some time, it has not yet been fully introduced and integrated as a platform for UKHO Defence Data provision.  We therefore require a DGS Capability Manager to bring DGS to full operational capability at the UKHO. The postholder will be required to quickly come to speed with the DGS concept and work with relevant testing and infrastructure partners to initialise DGS. Once operational you will take the lead for the day to day management and continuous improvement of DGS.

Job Requirements:

What we are looking for
The successful candidate will have a strong foundation knowledge in the principles of geospatial data management and geospatial data formats and standards.  Drive, self-management and independent decision making along with effective engagement with stakeholders will be key to successfully establishing and embedding DGS at the UKHO within the timescales driven by the Defence Customer.

To be successful in your application you will need:
  • An understanding of geospatial data management principles
  • A good knowledge of emerging geospatial developments
  • A comprehensive understanding and experience of geospatial data, formats and standards
Knowledge of MOD IT systems and specialist geospatial centres will be advantageous.

In return

UKHO is a great place in which to explore your career potential. While our projects are career-defining, the work/life balance that we can offer you is equally exceptional. From flexitime, flexible working, an award winning office environment and a generous annual leave allowance of 34.5 days including public holidays, the opportunities open to you here are hard to beat.

For more information and to apply please visit our website by clicking the apply button.
Closing date: 23:55 pm 13 March 2020.

Please note this is a MOD reserved post and therefore applications will only be accepted from UK Nationals (those with dual nationality are also ineligible to apply). The successful candidate must pass a disclosure and barring security check. (SC)

UKHO embraces diversity and promotes inclusion and equality of opportunity. We are a Disability Confident employer, which includes offering a guaranteed interview to candidates with disabilities, providing they meet the minimum selection criteria.
