Job Description:

GIS Specialists
Circa £32,000
Based Birmingham or Leeds

The role
At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life’s better by water, and that the waterways we take care of have an important contribution to make to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies. It takes an extraordinary range of professionals to bring our waterways to life, including people with the knowledge and skills to deliver high-quality geographic information systems and services.

Join us, as a GIS Specialist, and you will be working closely with members of our IT team to provide end users with spatial and location-based information that is relevant, accurate and up to date. On the operational side, this will involve maintaining the stability, resilience and performance of existing GIS systems and services. At the same time, you’ll be thinking about what those systems and services could look like in the future, as you research potential opportunities, take the lead on innovation, and manage our GIS solutions roadmap.

Job Requirements:

What you need
As well as having a degree (or equivalent) and a post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline, you must have wide-ranging experience of applying GIS principles within a business environment. Specific areas of experience we’re looking for include Python scripting, GI database systems and data extraction tools, and Esri ArcGIS software and systems (ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Collector etc.). Analytical and problem-solving skills are also important, as is the ability to communicate technical findings to non-technical audiences.

The impact you’ll have
The waterways our charity looks after contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation. Come and be part of it.

Our diversity
We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do.
