Job Description:

Are you an inquisitive, forward-thinking python developer? Would you like to work alongside the flood risk experts?

JBA Risk Management [www.jbarisk.com] are looking for a python developer to join our growing software team, helping to deliver our market-leading flood catastrophe models, used by some of the world’s largest organisations.

Who are JBA Risk?

We are the global leaders in flood risk management. We’re better known amongst our clients as The Flood People. Our flood maps, catastrophe models and analytics help the insurance, reinsurance and property industries to understand and manage flood risk across the world. We pride ourselves on our wealth of in-house expertise – we’re at the forefront of innovation and we’re lucky enough to have some of the very best in the industry working for us.

The role

We are looking for a numerically and scientifically literate Python developer to help us deliver fast, high-resolution and methodologically innovative catastrophe models to our clients. You’ll work on the core of our catastrophe analysis engine, its supporting components and the code used to automate building of model datasets.

Career Development and Benefits

We value our staff and believe in providing a competitive salary, flexible working conditions and the best benefits package we can. Our comprehensive benefits package includes pension, life insurance, medical assistance, subsidised income protection, childcare voucher and professional memberships.

As an employee-owned organisation, we have no external shareholders to pay, meaning all our staff benefit directly from our profits through our annual profit share scheme.

We’re focused on helping our staff develop their skills and offer a generous training budget to every member of staff. Our well-regarded professional development programme provides the opportunity to enhance and update technical and management skills throughout your career. We encourage and support the attainment of professional qualifications including chartered membership of professional associations.

Location

The job will be based in our Skipton (North Yorkshire) office. The Skipton office is located in the grounds of 900-year old Broughton Hall and surrounded by 3000 acres of parkland, farmland, woodland and moors. This unique work setting sits on the boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is close to Skipton, named the best place to live in Britain by the Sunday Times.

Job Requirements:

About you
  • You’re bright, inquisitive, quick to learn and interested in what we do!
  • You have some experience of Python programming experience (not necessarily in a commercial setting)
  • You appreciate the value of OO and good design practices / principles – DRY, SOLID, etc. – even if not widely experienced in their application (we can teach you)

The skills we’re looking for
  • You enjoy collaborating and being part of a cohesive team
  • You are flexible and happy to be involved in a wide range of software development activities (speaking to users, designing / writing / testing code, writing documentation)
  • You take pride in the quality of your work
  • You’re not afraid of change, within reason and with support, and you’re driven to create working software

An ideal candidate will additionally be able to demonstrate experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Experience of applying Python to scientific, computationally intensive problems involving large datasets
  • Experience in managing projects and teams
