Job Description:

For a surveyor, this is a wonderfully technical and rewarding role. The Rural Payments Agency is the agency that pays over £2bn each year for England’s Common Agricultural Policy schemes. We use geomatics technologies for surveillance and geo-intelligence gathering and to develop spatial data products. As you help lead our 200 Surveyors andAnalysts, you’ll make sure our data’s 100% correct and effective.

That data will then form the basis for our management of over 40 schemes, ranging from Basic Payments Scheme (BPS) to surplus butter or beef stocks; fruit and vegetable subsidies to the Beef Carcase Classification Scheme. Initiatives and policies that some of our most important industries rely on.

The role sits in the Geospatial Information (GI) Unit responsible for field measurement and data collection of rural geography. You’ll oversee, monitor and solve any issues with field- data collection and secondary digitisation. More broadly, you’ll make sure colleagues have the GNSS field measurement equipment they need, together with survey data-processing, operational and technical support.

In turn, you’ll coordinate inspection campaigns, mentor colleagues, analyse data and design manuals that instil best practice. As one of our subject-matter experts, we’ll also look for you to champion new technologies that help us become ever-more efficient.

A great communicator, it’s essential that you’re a qualified surveyor well-used to managing large team. You must also have completed a variety of topographical surveys; bring proven GI data capture, GNSS and GIS software knowledge; and be used post processing and creating GI data products. Aside from that, it’s crucial that your passion for geography matches our own.
