The National Trust has ownership of over 247,000 hectares of land and 742 miles of coastline, all the data behind this land needs managing.

Working as part of the regional internal National Trust consultancy, based in a beautiful barn conversion in the heart of Surrey, this is a hugely exciting role full of opportunities. You’ll be responsible for maintaining local data and from this provide management information for local decision making at our properties across the London South East.

The National Trust Consultancy is the home to specialists in every field of our work. A national consultancy, where resources are shared across disciplines and boundaries, it’s proving to be a great repository of skills, talent and experience. The diversity and quality of expertise within the Consultancy will enable our properties and places to benefit from an extraordinary range of creative and innovative thinking, as well as deep expertise in all matters relating to our twin purpose of caring for the nation’s heritage and landscapes, and making these accessible to all.

About the role

You’ll provide a consultancy service in GIS, GPS, digital mapping and data management, manipulation and interpretation, which will include responding to requests for information, advice and hands on support to meet the needs and demands of our property teams.

The National Trust has a requirement to maintain core spatial data to provide tenancy boundaries, acquisition, disposal and ownership, inalienability and grant application boundaries.

This is a 12 month maternity cover post – a great opportunity to gain experience of working within a large conservation charity and to spend time getting to know some of the most beautiful places in the region.

About you

In order to be considered for this role, you’ll need to demonstrate:
  • Relevant experience and understanding of GIS systems, as well as other in-house and other external data systems
  • Excellent consultancy skills and the ability to interpret technical data for non-technical audiences
  • Careful and meticulous attention to detail
  • Good cartographic and presentation skills
  • The ability to manipulate the datasets and generate clear informative layouts
  • Good understanding of conservation data in the wider context or other organisations
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of policies, best practice and guidance for GIS mapping, data management, manipulation and interpretation
  • Experience of using data to improve business performance
  • A qualification in a relevant field, with post qualification application, or experience to an equivalent level
